Milady's cosmetology textbooks are used in classrooms across the country, and increasingly, in fully online programs. Students need to see techniques performed accurately and step-by-step — something a printed diagram alone can't fully capture.

Cengage needed a production partner who could take existing textbook content and translate it into video tutorials for their online platform, while also producing the updated photography required for new print editions — without treating these as two separate projects with two separate budgets.

We worked directly from the textbook chapters to build shot lists for each technique — covering everything from skincare and hair color to nail care and client consultation. Each procedure was performed on set by licensed professionals and captured simultaneously on video and stills cameras.

The resulting footage was edited into chaptered video tutorials for Milady's online learning platform, while high-resolution frames and dedicated stills were delivered for use across updated print editions — keeping photography and video visually consistent across both formats.

The program has continued across multiple textbook editions and course updates, with the dual-capture model becoming the standard approach for new chapters and revisions — reducing production time and cost compared to running photography and video as separate shoots.
