Step One produces photography and video for educational publishers. We take what's in the textbook and put it on screen.
Inquire
We take what's on the page and produce it for the screen — instructional video formatted for the platforms your students are already using.
From facility tours to founder stories — we produce cinematic, documentary-style video for brands that have something worth showing.
Print-ready photography for educational publishers, built from your content and delivered to spec.
Services
We take what's on the page and produce it for the screen, chapter by chapter.
We work from your curriculum to develop scripts and shot lists, so production reflects the educational intent of the source material.
One shoot day delivers both the high-resolution photography your textbook needs and the video your online course requires.
We source and cast experts who can perform the skill correctly, not just look good on camera.
Distributed shoots coordinated nationally, with live client collaboration built into every production day.
We stay on the cutting edge of AI to shrink budgets and turnarounds without removing the human element of creation and education.

OBJECTIVE
Milady Education has been the standard in cosmetology education for decades. Their textbooks have trained generations of beauty professionals and built the foundation of an entire industry. But the way students learn has changed.
The mission: meet the modern student where they are. Today's cosmetology student expects to see a technique performed, not just read about it. They learn by watching. They retain by doing. A diagram on a page can describe a balayage or a facial massage, but it cannot show the pressure, the movement, the nuance that separates a good technician from a great one.
Milady came to Step One to close that gap. To take the expertise living in their curriculum and make it visible. To give students something they could actually follow along with, pause, rewind, and learn from. Live action training video is not a supplement to modern cosmetology education. It is the education.
STRATEGY
Before a single camera was unpacked, we made four decisions that defined everything that followed.
Lead with the curriculum. The textbook was the authority. Our job was translation, not reinvention.
Cast for the curriculum. Licensed professionals who could perform with clinical precision and subjects whose specific physical characteristics matched what each chapter required. Generic casting was never an option.
Design every shot for two formats. Every frame had to work as video and as print photography simultaneously. Nothing was shot for one format and adapted for the other.
Build a system, not just a production. The scale required a workflow capable of delivering thousands of assets without losing consistency or quality.
EXECUTION
We worked chapter by chapter through Milady's textbook, translating written procedures into precise shot lists. Not a general interpretation of cosmetology. A frame by frame translation of their curriculum.
Casting was the most demanding part of the process. Finding licensed professionals with the right technical ability and camera presence was one search. Finding subjects whose physical characteristics matched the specific needs of each chapter was another. Some procedures required conditions genuinely rare to find. We built a casting process from scratch that no talent agency had a database for.
On set, every day ran against an exact shot list with no room for approximation. Thousands of images. Hundreds of procedures. Multiple editions across several years. To deliver that volume we developed a proprietary workflow that captured broadcast quality video and print resolution photography from a single take. One setup. One performance. Two complete deliverables. A process we built from the ground up that does not exist anywhere else in educational content production.
